‘Resistance Missiles’ in Gaza

gaza_massacre1Now in its fourth day, Israel’s assault on Gaza remains a top story from China and Russia to the United States. The coverage and characterization of the story, however, varies according to the region and language doing the reporting.

Tuesday, Al-Arabiya’s top story (English), written from ‘occupied Jerusalem,’ is entitled ‘Gaza children die as Israel rejects truce.’

Also today, Al-Jazeera (Arabic) headlined with ‘364 martyrs of aggression in Gaza and the resistance missiles in Beersheba.’ We can all feel better knowing that those hundreds of missiles bombarding Israel for the past several months were merely ‘resistance’ missiles.

Yesterday, Al-Jazeera’s Arabic version referred to a leader of the Jerusalem Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, as a martyr when his house was bombed by the Israelis in a raid.

In another Aljazeera piece from Arabic ‘Angry demonstrations will force Arab cities to hold an emergency summit,’ Israel’s assault is called the ‘Israeli massacre on the Gaza strip.’

Why should Hamas stop firing its missiles when so many, especially in the Middle East, view them as ‘resistance’ against an occupation? Until Arabs and Muslims accept the right of Israel to exist, peace talks will continue to be an exercise in futility. And until the ‘right of return’ is abandoned, Palestinians will continue to lack privileges inherent to citizens belonging to a nation.

Multiculturalism Hits a Snag in Venice

Recently, an incident at the prestigious Venetian museum, Ca Rezzonico, caused a stir when one of their guards asked an Arab tourist to remove her niqab, a veil concealing all but her eyes. After she had purchased a ticket to the museum, she made her way to the second floor with her family and was advised to remove her veil. She refused, and a political firestorm ensued.

The museum director apologized. “It was a decision taken by the guard who has committed a serious error.” But was it really a mistake? According to their own guidelines for immigrants issued in 2007, it wasn’t. Instituted  under the previous center-left government, the law prevents niqabs and burqas because, “they prevent the identification of the person and are an obstacle to the interaction with others.”

Member of the anti-illegal immigrant Northern League, Sen. Castelli requested that the justice minister ensure the safety of the guard’s position at the museum. “He should be given an award, not punished,” cautioned the deputy mayor of nearby Treviso.

Whether the guard was justified in his action, at least the concerning parties are in an environment where they can speak openly and candidly without being labeled racists.

The Forbidden City? Saudi Women Protest Olympic Absence

New al-Qaeda Headquarters?

Known mainly for its place in a worn-out cliché, Timbuktu is on the verge of gaining recognition for something else, something far more sinister. A journalist from the left-leaning Italian magazine, L’espresso, has revealed that Timbuktu, Mali has become the new al-Qaeda outpost for launching terror missions.

Translated into English from the L’espresso article by Fabrizio Gatti:

We are on the border of the new kingdom of Al Qaeda, the free zone that is becoming what Sudan and Afghanistan used to be. The track that accompanies the latest generation of terrorists to training camps passes at the feet of these immense rusty dunes by sunset. A few kilometers north of Timbuktu, the mysterious city of Mali: ten centuries meeting place between black Africa and the Arab conquests and a few months the border post between tolerance and fanaticism. Among them, exists a commando of 15 mujahedin that tell and pride themselves on wanting to hit the Vatican. The commander is a lame Algerian, but the mind behind the plan would be his deputy: a fellow who is just over thirty years old and has lived in Italy.

But remember, this isn’t a religious war. Hitting the Vatican is just a political exercise which has absolutely nothing to do with a secret desire to spook and intimidate Christians by destroying one of Christianity’s greatest symbols.

In Mali, in the great desert north of the river Niger, Al Qaeda is building its future, one that is still possible without having to fight. It’s a territory where terrorists are preparing to use weapons and explosives, hiding commanders that have escaped from Iraq, organizing attacks, and using mobile and impenetrable training camps.

Wilders, Fitna and Two Korans

So when they (the Jews) exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, we said to them: “Be you monkeys, despised and rejected.” ~Surah 7:166 of the Koran in describing how Allah transformed Jews into monkeys and pigs as punishment for their transgressions (from the book Islam and the Jews by Dr. Gabriel PhD).

That’s my small attempt to protest the outrageous removal of ‘Fitna’ from various web sites.

Millions watched ‘Fitna’ for the few hours it was online. Millions are concerned with the ongoing sanitization of Islam carried out by western elites, and millions want to learn about verses which came after Mohammed’s Mecca revelations. Elites don’t like what Islam became after Mohammed failed to convert Jews and Christians in Medina. ‘Fitna’ doesn’t incite, it tells the truth by using the words of Mohammed, peace not be upon him.

In the film, Wilders merely uses sermons from imams, words from the Koran and actions of faithful Muslims to provide a more complete picture than the one we are getting from elites in the media and educational institutions. And I applaud him.

Kill the Christians!

Christian persecution

Yesterday’s al-Qaeda claim of responsibility for a kidnapping of two Austrian tourists in Tunisia was largely obscured by the ‘governor with the hooker’ story, but it reminded me of a little blurb in Italy’s Panorama which detailed recent Islamist oppression around the world.

Iraq: On the day Iraqi Christians celebrated Christmas Eve, seven holy sites were attacked. In Baghdad, terrorists hit the Chaldean Church of San Giorgio, a Greek Orthodox Church, and a convent of the nuns of Chaldea at Zaafraniya. In Mosul, the church of San Paulo was almost destroyed, and the entrance to an orphanage run by nuns of al-Noor was demolished.

An Iraqi Christian described how difficult it is for him to watch Muslim women pray in the spot where he used to worship before his Church of Mary in Baghdad was overrun by Muslims. Priests have been kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Iraq and an Orthodox Pope was beheaded in January of 2007.

Christians aren’t just under fire in Iraq. In the last few days Ashraf Ramaelah, the Italian representative of the Copt Christians who represent the largest religious minority in Egypt wrote a letter to the Egyptian ambassador denouncing the violence against the Christians along the Nile in 2007. Copt girls were raped and forced to convert to Islam. They were subjected to discrimination and arbitrary arrest; Christian shops were burned and looted in Isna, in Upper Egypt.

January 4, in Pakistan, 5 Christians were kidnapped in Waziristan by Taliban militia and subsequently released, but only after strong pressure. Rapes, accusations of blasphemy against Islam, forced conversions have all increased in number. And natives are increasingly hostile to mixed couples.

In India, Christians are considered outcasts and forced into humiliating work.

In soon to be independent Kosovo, Christians are exhuming their dead to prevent Muslims from desecrating their graves. Twelve tombs have been opened in Pec and three in Pristina. Coffins of Christians were transported into Christian Orthodox territory in Serbia. Gravesite vandalism isn’t new for them. When Milosevic was defeated, Muslims exacted revenge on the Serbs by burning more than 150 churches and monestaries.

Even in Turkey, an allegedly secular state, Christians are suffering from religious subjugation. Armenians, Syrians, Greeks and Catholics are species in extinction. Forty years ago in Istanbul, the ancient capitol of Christianity, there were 300,000 Christians. Today, only five thousand are left.

Meanwhile, we’ve got al-Jazeera and the rest of the Arab press along with the Western media giants pushing the notion that the most abused and exploited ethnic group are Muslims. I beg to differ. But until we’re willing to raise the difficult questions and depart from our endless practice of self-flagellation, the debate will continue to be waged by just one voice.

SIDE NOTE: Just as I was going to bed, I spotted this depressing bit of news courtesy of The Jerusalem Post:

A 19-year-old Israeli Arab woman has survived an attempted “honor killing” by her brother on Tuesday in the Arab village of Na’ura, near Afula, after two bullets fired at her head shattered on impact, failing to penetrate her skull. Paramedics said the girl survived by playing dead, leading her brother to stop shooting and kicking her.

The most disturbing part of the story wasn’t the attempted honor killing…It was the reaction of the girl’s family:
The 24-year-old suspect was warmly praised by some members of his family for the attempted murder. He is in police custody.
